AIR Music Tech Hybrid 3 Review

When it comes to digital synthesizer software, Air Music Tech has always been one of the go-to companies at the top of everybody’s list. However, one of their most recent releases, the Hybrid 3.0 synthesizer software, seems to have exploded in popularity and become a firm favorite for music producers around the world.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of similar applications and platforms out there, so is the Hybrid 3.0 the software you’ve been looking for, or should you keep shopping around? Today, we’re going to dive deep into the inner workings of the software, helping you to decide whether it’s the right tool for you.

Compatibility

Of course, there’s no point in getting the Hybrid 3.0 software if you can’t use it. However, this shouldn’t be a problem. Hybrid is compatible with both Mac and Windows computers and can work as a standalone application, or as part of your preferred VST. These compatible platforms include;

• Ableton Live
• Cubase
• Arsenal
• Logic Pro X
• ProTools
• ProTools 11

Since its release, there have been no major updates bar one, which means the software currently sits at its 3.0.7 release with no rumors of any updates any time soon. However, it’s worth noting that Hybrid 3.0 has been built with performance in mind.

Many of the processes are carried out with the software are performed ‘on-the-fly.’ This happens regardless of whether you’re using your computer, the built-in interface or a MIDI controller. All this ensures your computer will be able to run quickly and efficiently, without slowing down due to the processing of data-heavy tasks.

The Features

This is what you’ve been waiting for. In short, this software is overflowing with features, so much so that it’s hard to know where to begin. There’s plenty of tools and functions to experiment with, making this one of the most feature-rich synthesizers we’ve ever seen.

Most notably is the fact this software compromises of six individual oscillators subtractive, complete with a wavetable virtual synthesizer. This means you have six different ‘worktops’ to work on, helping you to produce the exact sounds you’re looking for.

Within these six areas, you’ll find over 1,200+ presets and settings to explore, including 200+ sounds that are completely brand-new to the software series, as well as 1,000+ refreshed and updated patches coming from the previous Hybrid version.

All these features are laid out using two simultaneous windows, each containing three oscillators, sub-oscillators and then all your filter, LFOs, effects and envelope windows, making this software incredibly easy to navigate and use, as well as providing everything you’ll need to make your sounds being just a few clicks away.

What we really love about this synthesizer is the all-new Oscillator Restart feature. This element is used for creating punchy bass sounds you simply couldn’t produce with the other Hybrid versions, as well as being a challenge with counterpart virtual synthesizers.

Another cool feature is the Dual Filtering and Saturation Modes that come as standard. These two modes can run concurrently, or individually, as well as having the unique ability to assign your filters to individual channels. Of course, you’ll be able to choose whether you’re using the integrated Voltage Controlled Filter, or the Digitally Controlled Filter.

This makes it incredibly easy to create retro-styled sounds that replicates those 70s and 80s synth classics, opening a whole new world of possibilities. Within these multimode filters, you’ll be able to choose between 23 unique modes, then dialing in your filter cut-off, key tracking, and velocity, giving you all the information you need in one, easy to access place.

Since we all know what LFOs are, we won’t bore you with details, but we will say that this software comes with four LFOs per part. These include;

• Two monophonic LFOs
• One polyphonic LFO
• One unique ‘Special Pump’ LFO

Even with all these features, we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of what features this software holds. In addition to all the key elements above, this synthesizer software will also grant you access to all your typical features which include;

• Envelope editors
• Doubling controls
• Highly flexible 16-step step sequencers
• Modulation matrices with over 20 destinations
• Morph groups for pan, EQ, filter and amplification control
• Over 40+ effects
• Patented Hype Algorithm for enhancing your low and high ends easily
• Seamless integration into your DAW software

Ease of Use

Despite all the features we’ve listed above, and there’s a wealth of more customization options within all those features, the software remains easy to use and doesn’t require a lot of learning to get to grips with.

The internet is overflowing with tutorials and video guides if you’re looking to learn how to do something specific, but the software itself has labeled controls, a full help manual, and documentation.

However, just clicking around to see what produces what and what each setting does to each song and just having a play and experiment with the software is a great way to learn how to use it. Nevertheless, if you have experience with another virtual synthesizer software, this platform will be a walk in the park.

While this is perhaps one of the only applications we can think of that doesn’t come with a demo version, so you can’t try it out for yourself before you buy it, but we think you’ll agree that you won’t be disappointed with everything that’s on offer.

The Final Verdict

All in all, this is one powerful piece of kit. With a highly compatible build that’s gentle with your operating system, an extensive range of features, sounds and effects and an easy to use interface, this is everything a digital virtual synthesizer should be.

As you’ll find out, the preset browser could use some work on it, but it gets the job done, but this is perhaps the only downside to this software.

If you’re looking for a powerful synthesizer plugin that gives you all the tools you need to create the sounds you’re trying to make, regardless of their style or genre, this is the software you’ve been looking for.
